Datsik

If you don’t know Datsik by now, you best read-up and learn it here. Datsik has been taking the dubstep scene by storm, blowing up dance floors around the globe with his original style of hip-hop future-tech bangers. In 2009 alone, Datsik had over 7 number one releases on Beatport, and vinyl sales through the roof on many other sites such as Chemical Records, Red-Eye and Juno. Aside from that, he has also done remixes for some of the biggest names in the scene such as the Crystal Method, Freestylers, Bassnectar, Noisia, Diplo, the Wu-tang Clan, and Apex from the critically acclaimed Lifted Music label; not to mention countless collaborations with some of the hottest producers in the scene!

With multiple anthems under his belt, countless plays from some of the biggest DJ’s, and an endless perseverance to reach that next step, Datsik has proven himself to be one of the best dubstep producers around. Datsik rose to name with his frequent works with fellow Canadian dubstep producer Excision, who is very popular and an amazing dubstep DJ who sounds very similar in style to Datsik. 

Datsiks first release was in the spring of 2009, with his latest, and in my opinion his best album yet, the Nuke Em' EP (cover shown above).

WTF is dubstep?

For all of you who arent aware, dubstep is the new up and coming sound of the techno/electro scene. Dubstep is a combination of electro house, fidget house, and break beat styled electric music combined all into one.  Its overall sound has been described as tightly yet scattered productions with overwhelming bass lines and sketchy drum patterns, clipped electronic samples, and occasional vocals.

Dubstep is a type of electronic music that is believed to have originated from the Jamaican dub music. It is also considered to be rooted in the Jamaican sound system cultures, which were characterized by large grinding noises or disco bass frequencies. These sound systems exhibit legitimate artistic innovation.

The modern day dubstep style originated in South East London. The year 1998 recorded the earliest release of dubstep. The earliest dubstep music would be best described as darker, more of an experimental type of music with the incorporation of funky elements of breakbeat and instrumental dub remixes. The electronic music is also characterized by the incorporation of the dark elements of drum and bass and 2-step.

In 2001, a night club in London known as Forward began to showcase and campaign for other strains of dark garage music. This was considered to be influential to the development of dubstep. Actually, the term dubstep was started to be used in the year 2002. This was used as a reference to a genre of music. 2002 was the year when the stylistic trends utilized in creating remixes became more distinct from 2-step and grime.

Dubstep is generally instrumental. Similar to a vocal garage hybrid  of “grime” music ,  the genre's feel is commonly dark with tracks that frequently use a minor key and can feature dissonant harmonies such as the tritone interval within each individual riff. Other distinguishing features often found are the use of samples, a propulsive, synthesized rhythm, and an almost on-going distorted sub-bass. Some dubstep artists have also incorporated a variety of outside influences, from dub-influenced techno such as basic  to classical music or even heavy metal and punk rock.

Believe it or not, there is actually a very pronounced dance style that comes with dubstep music. It is usually called the "Shuffle" depending on where you are from. It reflects and is very similar to hardstyle dancing. Danicng to dubstep is very unique and is also very fun once you get into to the musicand learn how to properly do it. Also many people incorporate a crazy version of the robot (where it looks like their having a seizure almost) into slower more beat heavy dubstep songs like seen below.

Like stated above, this style of dancing relates to the same style of daincing that goes hand in hand with hardcore.

Flux Pavilion

Joshua Steele AKA "Bubbles"

Flux Pavilion, formally known as Joshua Steele is a dubstep producer from Towcester, UK. He also known as Bubbles, as well as Josh Extravaganza. Steele is also a Drummer in local Indie/Rock band called Real Rabitzkin. Has also releases drum & bass solos under other names, as well as on his first Flux Pavilion release name. He referred to his dubstep releases as "The Darker Side Of Flux Pavilion", where he got his DJ name from, and has many website pages for his drum & bass and dubstep productions.

Flux Pavilion is truly making some of the sickest remixes out today, and rising to the top of the dubstep scene. Flux is known for remixing many pre-recorded electronic songs from various artists into a unique dubstep style associated with his style of mixing. Not only does he re-create remixes, but Flux also mixes and creates his own original dubstep music as well. Although he is new to the dubstep game, he has really promoted himself well over the web to gain popularity in America. With sites such as 'Twitter, Facebook, and his very sick official Flux Pavilion MySpace page where he constantly uploads new sick tracks, he is truly making a name for himself. Skrillex

Skrillex, formally known as Sonny Moore, has really has secured himself as the hottest DJ in the upcoming electronic music scene, with his bass heavy club bangers that almost everyone seems to fall in love with. The crazy looking rising star, who some say is on his way to becoming the next Deadmau5 in terms of the new cool DJ blasting through your speakers. Skrillex, acquired such a high fan-base so quickly through his unique sounding, high energy dubstep remixes and originals that he has been consistently releasing this past year. Skrillex is definitely my favorite dubstep artist by far for in my opinion he has the craziest and unique mixes out.

Sonny Moore

Sonny Moore, is an American producer from Los Angeles, California well known for his role as the former vocalist for the hardcore band From first to Last. In late fall of 2007 he embarked on his first tour as a solo artist, the Team Sleep Tour. After recruiting a new band lineup, Moore toured North America on the Alternative Press Tour, supporting popular rock bands such as All Time Low, and appeared on the cover ofAlternative Press annual 100 Bands You Need to Know issue. In June 2008, Moore went into recording for his debut album, titled Bells. He recently released the Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites EP as a co-release between mau5trap and Big Beat record labels, and runs an imprint label called Owsla.

A few months ago Skrillex released his first debut solo album: My Name Is Skrillex EP which is very sick.  You should all pick it up if you like heavy BANGER electronic music. On it are a ridiculously good amount of crazy dubstep bangers as well as what some call the sickest Skrillex remix out to date, and I might just have to agree. It’s a sick absolute banger remix to La Roux’s ‘In For The Kill’ which starts out sounding pretty sick and crazy, then goes to one of the heaviest most bass filled remixes ever. This is one that requires the use of massive speakers and subs to truly experience it. Turn up the bass and enjoy!
